More than 1,600 students have made the Spring 2014 Dean's List for academic achievement at Coastal Carolina University.

Lebanon Valley College's 145th Commencement Exercises May 10 graduated 523 students, who received their degrees in the LVC Gymnasium. The 416 graduating seniors were joined by 29 doctor of physical therapy candidates, 78 master's degree candidates, and 31 students who graduated in December 2013 and have now formally received their degrees.

The following people recently were initiated into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation's oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines.

Loyola University Maryland has announced the members of its fall 2013 Dean's List. In order to qualify for the Dean's List at Loyola, a student must have a GPA of at least 3.5 with a minimum of 15 credits. The following local students have achieved this honor:

The School of Business at the State University of New York at New Paltz held its ethical debates competition in van den Berg Hall over a three-week period in March. Six teams of students participated in the competition and debated timely topics, including the Common Core, the Keystone XL Pipeline, and the Affordable Care Act, in front of a panel of judges. Teams had a total of 15 minutes to present their arguments and were judged on their effective use of evidence and knowledge of the topic, persuasiveness, opening and closing statements and rebuttals, language use, and performance. "The debates provide an opportunity for the participating students to develop their critical thinking and oral communication skills," said Chih-Yang Tsai, interim dean of the School of Business. "I commend the courage of the students who chose to take the challenge. I would also like to thank those Business Advisory Council members who served as judges for their valuable comments to the students." After each round of debates, the judges provided personal feedback and recommendations to the students on how to improve their public speaking and presentation skills for their future academic and personal careers. "Debate participation allows students to practice their analytical, critical thinking, and presentation skills while learning to see issues from different perspectives," said Tom Sipos, of Hudson Valley Focus and chair of the Business Advisory Council at SUNY New Paltz. "When experienced business leaders judge and critique the debate teams, they effectively prepare students for the environment they will operate in upon graduation." Ying Zhan '15, Brooklyn, N.Y.; Kristen Bucki '17, Commack, N.Y.; Kemorene Henry '15, Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; and Joelle Bracco '15, Staten Island, N.Y., successfully made their way through two rounds of debates and won the championship. Each student on the winning team received a $100 scholarship. The debate competition was judged by SUNY New Paltz faculty members Professor Rief Kanan and Interim Associate Dean Sally Schultz, and local business leaders Ed Lane, Lane Asset Management; Vince Pangia, Pangia & Company, CPA's LLC; Stephen Digilio, Morgan Stanley; Scott Hutchins, Jabil Circuit, Inc.; and Gene Moncrief, Moncrief Associates. The following Colgate University students are recipients of the Dean's Award for academic excellence during the fall 2013 term at Colgate University. To be eligible for the Dean's Award, a Colgate student must achieve a minumum 3.30 average while enrolled in at least four courses.

More than 500 students earned undergraduate, graduate and doctoral degrees from Hofstra University in December 2013. The university celebrated commencement during a ceremony at the David S. The following local residents are among those to be named to the Roger Williams University Dean's List for the Fall 2013 semester. Full-time students who complete 12 or more credits per semester and earn a GPA of 3.4 or higher are placed on the Dean's List that semester.

More than 2,000 high-achieving students have been named to the Hofstra University Dean's List for Fall 2013. Students who began their studies before Fall 2012 must earn at least a 3.4 grade point average to qualify. Those who entered the university after Fall 2012 must earn a grade point average of 3.5. Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs Herman A. Berliner congratulates these students on their impressive academic achievement.

A total of 1569 SUNY Oneonta students earned Dean's List honors for the fall 2013 semester. To qualify for the Dean's List, students must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while carrying a course load of 12 hours or more.

The State University of New York at Potsdam recently named 851 students to the President's List, in recognition of their academic excellence in the Fall 2013 semester. The SUNY Potsdam students were honored for earning top marks by Interim President Dr. Dennis L. Hefner.

The State University of New York at Geneseo has announced its Dean's List for the fall semester 2013. To be on the list, a student must have achieved a 3.5 grade point average while taking at least 12 credit hours. Students on the list from this area are:

Lebanon Valley College named 658 undergraduates to its Dean's List. The students maintained a 3.4 average out of a possible 4.0.

Hundreds of Blue Hens will pack their bags and head to all corners of the globe as part of UD's trailblazing study abroad program. The Institute for Global Studies (IGS) coordinates over 70 programs annually, encouraging students to "Dare to Explore."

Ithaca College students build intergenerational relationships by adopting elderly matches through Project Generations

Approximately 1,100 new students, selected from more than 12,000 applicants, began their studies at SUNY Oneonta this fall. Classes began on Wednesday, Aug. 28. The SUNY Oneonta Class of 2017 is exceptionally talented and diverse, said Roger Sullivan, the college's associate vice president for enrollment management. The freshman class has an average high school grade-point average of 91 and an average combined math and critical reading SAT score of 1135. Acceptances of AALANA (African American, Latino, Asian and Native American) students were up 11.3% this year, and for the first time, AALANA students accounted for 1 in 5 new freshmen and transfer students.
